St. George’s College Aruvithura, a minority educational institution affiliated to M G University, Kottayam, Kerala and founded by St. George Forane Church, Aruvithura has been in existence for the past fifty years. The founder fathers of the institution showed remarkable fortitude and foresight in shaping the destiny of the institution along the lines of academic excellence, spiritual vitality and social concern. The college is a premier institution with a sound work-ethic, dedication and reputation for value based quality education. Presently the college enjoys the position of a great seat of learning catering to the educational requirements of the eastern parts of the Meenachil Taluk and the high range sector of Kerala. Located in a rural area, the college has been rendering great service by making available to the youth of these regions a wide range of curricular options. The college sees to it that they are tailored to satisfy the specific credentials of employment as well as social development.

The college has a humble start in 1965 as a junior college, however the institution exhibited remarkable potential and phenomenal growth from the very period of inception. The college was upgraded as a fully fledged degree college in 1978. The college underwent its first accreditation in 1999 and was accredited at the Four Star Level. The college was reaccredited in 2007 with ‘A’ grade. Starting with just five Pre-Degree batches, the college has a strength of 1497 (2014-15) students, 48 teachers and 42 support staff. There are 44 teachers in the aided stream of which 17 hold doctoral degree 11 M. Phil and 8 are currently pursuing research. There are 45 dedicated faculty in the self-financing stream.

Set against a rural locale, most of the students belong to middle and poor class families. The need for individual, institutional and environmental improvement has been translated into major academic and outreach programmes that come under the UG, PG and Ph.D. programmes. The college now offers 17 under graduate programmes and 6 post graduate programmes. The average pass percentage for the last five years have been 85 for UG and 92 for PG. Around 58% of the students receive various kinds of National and State Scholarships. The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India has identified the P G Department of Chemistry for DST-FIST support. In academic and co-curricular activities especially in sports and games the college has always been in the forefront and could win many laurels of victory. We could lift the prestigious Malayala Manorama Trophy for the achievements in sports and games.

The college has taken great strides in building a nexus with the community. The Community Telecasting Centre (SGC TV) was the first major step in this regard. It coordinates the cable network of the locality and airs various educational and cultural programmes often conceived and created by the college community. The Community College which was launched in the year 2013 is yet another remarkable move in this direction. This helps to weave a comprehensive network of neighbourhood services by means of instructional inputs for agricultural and farm development. The community college offers various programmes for the local people and arranges coaching for various competitive examinations. The college has a well laid-out and well-maintained campus spread over an area of 17.5 acres. The college community is keenly conscious of the rich bio-diversity in the campus and takes every possible measure to nurture it. The poly house and the organic farming practiced in the campus motivate the staff and students to follow the conventional and natural farming methods. The college is committed to thecause of the food safety as the state of Kerala encounters the problem of the alarming increase in the number of patients suffering from cancer and other food related fatal diseases

In the last five years the college has opted for a facelift by adopting new infrastructural facilities and teaching-learning resources, ICT enabled teaching practices and renovated labs and the stage in the auditorium. The Golden Jubilee Block spread over an area of 40000 sq. ft. has added 32classrooms 2 seminar halls and a spacious badminton court to the total space. Installation of Wi-Fi facility and Video conferencing and procurement of LAN facility have given a new impetus to the teaching learning process. The Electronic attendance implemented in the campus is yet another great stride that enhances the efficacy of the attendance system. Keeping in view the difficulties in transport encountered by people from inland areas the college has arranged its own conveyance facility for students.

The college could secure ‘A’ Grade in the second cycle of its accreditation in 2007. This was followed by a period of introspection and the resulting improvement in quality. Gearing up for the third accreditation, toeing the line of recommendations put forward by the IQAC, was an enriching experience in itself. We do hope to continue with our pursuit of excellence and submit our strengths and weaknesses for the third cycle of accreditation

Curricular Aspects

St.George’s College Aruvithura, a first grade college affiliated to M G University, offers 17 Undergraduate and 6 Post graduate programmes. The college has a Research Centre in Chemistry as well. The annual academic plan and the teaching plan are designed, compatible to the University calendar. Accordingly, the curriculum of the University is productively implemented. M. G. University introduced Choice Based Credit and Semester System (CBCSS) for undergraduate programmes in 2009 and CSS for Post graduate programmes in 2012. The college has successfully initiated steps to seamlessly integrate itself into the new paradigm. Being a constituent college the horizontal flexibility is limited to the extent of elective and open courses in the case of undergraduates and elective courses in the case of post graduates. In the Post-accreditation period the college has initiated many academic programmes tailored to meet the specific needs of employment as well as social development. During the last five years there has been an increase of 39% in the number of programmes offered. M. A. Economics, M.Sc. Food Science and Technology, B. Com. Co-operation, B. Com. Finance and tax, B. Com. Office Management, B.Com. Computer Application, B. Com. Marketing, B. C. A., and B. A. Mass Communication and Journalism are the new programmes started in the self-financing stream apart from the B.C.A. programme in the aided stream

As members of the academic bodies of the university, teachers are actively involved in curriculum design and planning and many have attended workshops arranged in connection with syllabus revision. Teachers upgrade their knowledge and skills by regularly conducting, and participating in seminars, conferences, workshops, and orientation and refresher courses. On the basis of the feedback from the stakeholders and in tune with the burgeoning tendencies in the career sector special value added programmes are formulated to enrich the knowledge and competence of students. Open and elective courses under CBCSS for UG and elective courses under CSS for PG offer the necessary academic flexibility. Some patterns of enrichment have been adopted by the college to whet the potential of the students. Walk With a Scholar (WWS), and Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP) and various training and coaching sessions organized by the Placement Cell, enrich and supplement the existing curriculum. English Cafe is a venture by the college to hone the English fluency skill of the students. Vital social issues like environment conservation, human rights etc. are incorporated into the syllabi by means of awareness programmes and activities spearheaded by the different student organizations like NSS and NCC.

Teaching-Learning and Evaluation

Transparency is maintained in the admission procedure at all stages. Admission is based on merit and subject to the stipulations of the Govt.of Kerala and the Centralised Allotment Process of M G University. The college publishes its prospectus annually and it provides adequate information regarding admission procedures, available courses, fee structure and other information relevant to student need. The college has adopted the healthy practice of preparing a teaching plan in respective subjects well before the commencement of the academic session. A complete and exhaustive academic calendar is prepared in accordance with the university norms to ensure effective teaching. A noteworthy feature of the academic programme of the college is the maintenance of Teacher Performance Record by teachers and this helps them to plan their teaching programmes besides maintaining a record of lectures given. The Teacher Performance Records are verified periodically by the Heads of the Department and in turn by the Principal to ensure that the academic calendar is followed strictly.

Class room lectures are supplemented with ICT devices like smart boards, LCD projectors and facilities like video conferencing and E-tuition. Home assignments, weekly test papers, question answer sessions and surprise tests enable the teachers to make a continuous assessment and improve the performance of students. Transparency is ensured in the conduct of internal examinations and assessment which forms 20% of the total marks. There is an effective grievance redressal mechanism with respect to students’ complaints regarding internal marks. Bridge courses are offered at the beginning of the course to effect a smooth transition from the higher secondary level to the higher education system. Advanced learners are identified and they are given focused orientation in seeking the heights in respective careers and are motivated through multiple intelligence skills. They engage in peer teaching as well. Differently abled students, poor and erratic learners are identified and proper attention and necessary remedial coaching is provided to enhance their performance and minimize the dropout rate. Within the framework of the curriculum prescribed by M G University, the college has developed modules to enrich the knowledge, skills and values of students. Tutorials, Walk With a Scholar (WWS) programme, and Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP) are offered to enrich the courses and this hugely gives leverage to students. Video conferencing facility enable the students to get into contact with eminent personalities from prestigious institutions across the country and abroad. Departmental open houses conducted every semester, offer the right platform for students to voice their grievances and teachers to collect feedback for proper rectifications. Maximum attention is paid to improve the performance of students in university examinations as evidenced by the average pass percentage of 92 for UG and 85 for PG in the past five years. 11 teachers hold the M. Phil degree and 18 teachers have Ph.D. as their highest degree. Since the last accreditation there have been 35 international publications, 7 national publications, 39 paper presentations and 8 books published by the faculty. 24 teachers with excellent academics have been appointed in the last five years. Teachers upgrade their knowledge and skills by regularly conducting, and participating in, seminars, conferences, workshops, and orientation and refresher course. Library, one of the greatest resources in learning is a well stocked one with 31439 volumes in stock. The general library is automated with software SOUL and supplemented with N List-Inflibnet facility as per the recommendation of the IQAC. The library subscribes to 67 journals and periodicals. Apart from the general library a few departmental libraries also cater to the academic needs of the students.

Research, Consultancy and Extension

The college is keen about maintaining the ambience of research which facilitates the teaching, learning process and in turn assures the quality. The college has a Research Development Cell to accentuate the research activities among its faculty. The department of Chemistry enjoys the status of the research centre and efforts are underway to elevate the Post Graduate department of Physics to the same status. The college publishes the International Research Journal ‘GEM’. There are 4 recognised guides in the college. Out of the 48 permanent faculty, 18 have doctoral degree and 13 hold M. Phil. Currently 8 teachers are engaged in research. The funding of Rs 34.5 lakhs under the FIST programme by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt of India has provided a fillip to the Research Department of Chemistry. Apart from this the institution has received special grants and finance from the UGC, M.G. University and KSHEC. Since the last accreditation the college has undertaken one major research projects and 7 minor research projects. There has been a considerable upgradation of laboratory and other infrastructure facilities to further research.

The college is keen about maintaining the interface with the society through community oriented research and consultancy service. The faculty are advised to utilize their expertise for the community and the consultancy is done gratis by them. The Department of Chemistry does the water and soil analysis for the local community. Food Adulteration analysis is done by the Department of Food Science. They have acted as consultant for Malabar Food Products Mundakkayam to increase the shelf life of ready to eat chapathi. The department signed an agreement with Sri Anusham Industries Nagercoil for providing technical assistance in establishing a microbiological laboratory and training for the employees. Tax consultancy is offered by the Department of Commerce. Consultancy for organic farming and the installation of the vermin compost plant is offered by the department of Botany. SGC TV telecasts programmes like Nalla Malayalam, Election and Budget analysis etc.

The college has successfully networked neighbourhood services and built a nexus between academics and extension and through such interfacing internalizing and institutionalizing the extension work in order to bring about social transformation. The Community College has been a major step in this regard since the last accreditation. The foundational goal of the community college is to extend the human resources and infrastructure facilities to the members of the locality. The interface between the college and the community is expected to be the outcome of this new venture. To impart life skills and communication and administrative skills the community college has designed a host of programmes. The campus community deems it proper to make its existence meaningful by indulging in activities involving social commitment. Teachers make use of their spare time to impart various skills to the members of the community. Classes on farming , gardening and mushroom cultivation are given to the local farmers. Spoken English classes and classes on the fundamentals of the Indian Constitution , Food Adulteration are arranged for the locals. The poly house and organic farming have the goal of familiarizing and rendering the advantages of precision farming and good quality vegetables to the college community as well as the locals. The Green Soldiers of the campus monitors the major environmental initiatives. SGC TV, the community television centre, is a means of reaching out to the community and capturing the heart-throbs of the locality. Nadankalamela and the staging of Nangyarkoothu has been attempts at rejuvenating the inimitable folk tradition of Kerala. As a gesture of goodwill the college community joined hands to build a house for an economically backward student. Apart from these the college has arranged a host of other extension activities like Manavamaitrisadassu, Gramadarsanam, Seminar on human rights, and legal awareness, class for kudumbasree members and participation in Clean Kerala Campaign etc. The student organizations like NSS and NCC spearhead activities like blood donation and planting trees in the campus. The college has an organ donation forum as well. Teachers conduct classes for the students of nearby schools. Students are motivated to engage in charitable service. They make frequent visits to the nearby old age homes and house for the destitute and on every Thursday students bring additional tiffin packets to be distributed among the inmates of such institutions.

Infrastructural and Learning Resources

The college is very keen about providing excellent infrastructure and other learning facilities. The IQAC makes the necessary suggestions to the Principa who in turn makes the proposal to the management for augmenting and refurbishing the infrastructure, and funds are allocated accordingly. The college has a well laid out and well maintained campus spread over an area of 17.5 acres. There are 8 blocks which comprises 79 classrooms, 14 laboratories, 14 staff rooms, 5 seminar halls, 3 computer labs and 2 examination halls. Apart from the above, the college has multi purpose auditorium, Community Telecasting Centre (SGC TV), Studio for Video Conferencing, Library, Examination Office, Co-operative Store, Research Lab, IQAC Office with Computer Facility, Administrative Block, well equipped Student Amenity Centre and ladies’ waiting room. The college has a sports hostel, run with the financial assistance of the Kerala Sports Council.

There has been remarkable upgradation and augmentation of infrastructure in the last five years. A magnificent Jubilee Block of 40,000 sq.ft. has been built. A green house, vermin compost plant, footpath linking the different blocks, roofing of the main block, massive compound wall, spacious parking zone, drainage, additional ladies toilet etc. have also been the recent additions to the infrastructure. Apart from these the administrative block, the college chapel, the stage in the auditorium and laboratories were refurbished. The college procured its own conveyance by buying a college bus. The college has four girls’ hostels which can accommodate 280 girls and a boys’ hostel as well. A host of ICT facilities like installation of wi-fi, smart Class rooms, Electronic attendance, video conferencing, E-tuition etc. are other innovations in infrastructure. The college has 152 computers which are connected with LAN facility. There has been an upgradation of internet bandwidth from 16 Mbps to 40 Mbps. The college has also procured a copier and ID card printer, 4 water coolers and laboratory equipments. The college offers ample facilities for preserving the health and maintaining the sports facilities for the staff and students. A well-equipped gymnasium with 24 stations, the football, volleyball, kho-kho, and kabaddi court, spacious playground, badminton court and cricket pitch. The general library of the college has a carpet area of 450 sq.ft. and a seating capacity of 100. The library is automated with SOUL software and holds a volume of 31439 Books. N-list INFLIBNET facility is provided to all which they can use in and outside the campus. The college subscribes to about 67 academic journals-periodicals. Funds are allocated for the purchase of fresh books and other reading materials on a regular basis. Photocopying facility also is available in the library.

Student Support and Progression

The college is keen about offering the maximum student support and related welfare schemes. Students are admitted to different academic courses on the basis of their merit. The college publishes the updated prospectus and academic calendar annually, at the beginning of each academic session, which contain information regarding admission procedures, fee structure, financial aid programmes and also rules and regulations of the college, details of curricula, library and support services, regulations regarding internal evaluation and university examinations, evaluation methods etc. Information about the college activities is displayed on the college website also. Most of the students of the college belong to the socially and economically backward sections of the society. Accordingly the college extends all the possible help in the form of welfare schemes like fee concession, incentives and scholarships including the state and central scholarships which help the less privileged to come out of their confines. The college has a scholarship wing which monitors the distribution of scholarships and gives necessary guidelines to the students. A lump sum of Rs.39,26,395 was availed by 58% of students in the form of various scholarships in the year 2014-15. Besides this, the college offers various scholarships and endowments some of which are instituted by the alumni.

Special concern is meted out to SC/ST students and poor learners. They are motivated through remedial sessions, constant mentoring and financial aid. The close tie between students and teachers is a legacy of the college which distinguishes it from other institutions. The Placement Cell organises various training sessions and workshops to augment the career prospects of the students. The cell orients the students to participate in various campus interviews. The English Café gives the necessary training to improve the English fluency of the students. An Entrepreneurship Development Club is functioning in the college which promotes the self-employment opportunities of the students and arranges industrial visits for the students every year.

The students of the college excel in sports activities. The department of Physical Education has been providing various facilities for the promotion and participation of the students in sports activities. A good number of students have been winners in various sports, games and athletic competitions at the state and national level. Intercollegiate Volleyball matches, interdepartmental cricket, volleyball and football matches are organized annually. The college pays due attention to the artistic talents of the students. The inter-departmental arts fest is an occasion to whet the talents of the student artists. Those who top the various items are sent for the university youth festival. The art house, college magazine, campus voice etc. offer the platform to give expressions to the literary creativity of the students. The college has units of NCC, NSS, Jesus Youth and many clubs and various departmental associations. The college has a Grievance Redressal Committee with the Principal as the Chairman and two senior faculty as members to deal with the grievances of students. An Anti-ragging Committee and an Ethic Committee are functioning in the college to prevent ragging of any kind and to maintain the decorum of the campus.

Governance, Leadership and Management

The college has a well ordered decentralized organisational structure to ensure its smooth functioning. The Board of Trustees of the college is responsible for framing the policies and the plan of action of the institution. There is a college council consisting of the Principal, heads of all departments, two elected representatives of the faculty and the staff advisor. The IQAC monitors the quality initiatives to ensure the satisfaction of all the stakeholders. The manager of the college is the appointing authority and hence oversees the activities of the institution. The principal is the administrative authority of the college and is the link between the management and the staff of the college. Leadership is groomed at various levels by allotting the co-ordinatorship of various associations and clubs to the faculty, thereby involving them in administration. Human Resources Management strategy of the institution consists in the division of labour and allocation of duties and responsibilities to staff and students on the basis of their calibre, aptitude, talent and efficiency. Duties and responsibilities are distributed to the students as well. Thus the institution effects participatory management in its governance. Ample opportunities for developing leadership skills are provided by the student organizations like NSS, NCC and various clubs. Class leaders are elected from each class so that the class tutors can monitor the discipline of these classes. The staff appraisal is done through the Teacher Performance Record which are monitored by the heads of the departments and in turn by the principal. The institution makes use of a well functioning mechanism for grievance redressal and for analysing student feedback on the institutional performance. Feedback is collected from students and the analysed results are given to the faculty which give them the necessary suggestions for rectification with respect to teaching methodology and other welfare schemes for the students.

Innovations and Best Practices

Situated on the banks of river Meenachil, the campus boasts of rich bio-diversity and typically rural locale of pristine purity. As evidenced by the green audit, plants belonging to numerous species and family are found in the campus. The college community is bent on preserving this inimitable legacy handed over to it by the predecessors. Back to Nature Drive and the Community Telecasting Centre (SGC TV) have been the best practices pursued by the college in the last five years. Turning Green has been one of the prime goals of the institution which was reflected in all the major moves it made. All the innovations of these years also contributed to fulfilling the envisaged vision and mission.. Extensive use of the ICT methods including the installation of wi-fi and E-tuition facility in the teaching-learning process has tailored the students to be globally competent. Additional Skill Acquisition Programme in collaboration with the Govt. of Kerala and the Walk with a Scholar are implemented. As part of the Back to Nature Drive a green house is set up and organic farming is in practice in the campus. A college bus is procured to meet the hazard of the lack of transportation facility experienced by students hailing from remote areas. A Recycle Polythene campaign is launched to minimize wastage. English Café is started to ensure English fluency of the students. N-list Inflibnet facility is implemented in the general library. Both the library and the administration section were fully automated. Civil Service Orientation for the students is introduced. All the innovations adopted by the institution has enabled it to grow in leaps and bounds.
